Late August has a particular sort of panic to it. The social feed is quiet, enquiries have been patchy, summer was a bit disappointing, and suddenly autumn feels very close indeed. More posts. More ads. A new website. Something, quickly.
Before you spend on any of that, stop. Buying another tactic before you understand the problem is a sticking plaster on a broken leg. It can make things feel busy for a fortnight, but it will not mend the thing causing weak demand, poor-fit leads or awkward sales conversations.
A Social Media Fix Can Hide a Bigger Problem
When someone tells us their social media is not working, we do not automatically recommend more social media. A quiet feed is usually a symptom, not a diagnosis.
The issue may be that the wrong people are seeing it. Your offer may be vague. Buyers may not understand why they should choose you. Or you might be speaking to anyone with a pulse, which is how perfectly decent businesses end up attracting enquiries they do not actually want.
We often see the same visible problems:
- A healthy follower count with no sales
- Enquiries that are poorly matched or price-led
- Referral work drying up without a clear replacement
- Leads going cold after a first call
- Teams feeling a bit embarrassed by the words on their own website
Each one needs looking at in context. A local service business might have plenty of awareness, but no clear reason to choose it over the cheaper firm down the road. A wellness clinician may attract interest, yet lose trust because their real knowledge is buried under generic wellness language.
Marketing is not the colouring in department. It is not decoration added after all the useful business decisions have been made. Strategy and data come first, then communication gives the right buyer a clear reason to act. Whoop de doo, Basil. Posting three more times a week will not repair a muddled offer.
Start with a Market Reality Check-Up
Diagnosis before treatment. Every time.
At Elle & Co, this starts with our Market Reality Check-Up, the first stage of our Marketing to Money Method. It is not a performative discovery call followed by a pre-baked package with your name popped on the front. It is the bit that stops you spending on the wrong thing.
Rather than blaming one loud, obvious channel, we look at the full system around it. That can include:
- Your current offer, revenue aims and margins
- The buyers you genuinely want more of
- Where leads currently come from
- What happens between enquiry and sale
- Local market context, customer feedback and drop-off points
That wider view matters. If prospects disappear after a first conversation, the problem may not be awareness. If your website gets visits but nobody enquires, the message may not be doing its job. If every conversation turns into a price comparison, your difference may be invisible.
For the so-called boring businesses we work with, regulated firms, clinicians and local service businesses, the value is often very real but not apparent from the outside. It is not about making them not boring. The point is to draw out that one thing people should remember and choose them for.
Differentiate Before Buyers Default to Price
If people cannot differentiate between you, the only thing they have to differentiate you on is price. That is not a grand marketing theory. It is what happens in ordinary buying decisions when everything sounds much the same.
Our Differentiator Lab and Ikigai Differentiation Method help uncover the overlap between what you are genuinely good at, what you can credibly own, and what buyers actually care about. The useful details are usually already there. They are just buried under drab, interchangeable wording.
As a founder marketing consultant in Glasgow, I might find that difference in deep community knowledge, a calmer way of managing risk, specialist experience with a certain type of client, or a better route from first enquiry to finished work. It does not need to be loud to matter.
I am not particularly creative, I am not particularly wacky. You do not need a hideous personality transplant, a clever slogan, or a founder pretending to be someone they are not. Clear language and proof of how you think will often do far more.
Recognition is nice. Resonance is better. You need 100 people that are going to buy from you, better than a million that do not. It is not social media, it is interest media.
Put Method Before Deliverables
Once the Reality Check-Up has shown what is actually going on, AI Consultancy can help you use your knowledge, processes and data with more sense. AI is useful, of course, but it cannot replace clear thinking about your buyers, offer or position.
Only then do we write a Marketing Strategy. Come on, chaps. A strategy written without diagnosis is just a list of hopeful activities in a nice document.
A written strategy should make the next moves plain:
- Which audiences deserve attention now
- What messages need tightening
- Which channels suit the problem
- How the conversion path should work
- What can wait until there is a stronger foundation
That is when deliverables earn their place. eNurture may be right for better email database management and, where it fits, a sensible leaflet or letter strategy. Conversion training can improve the touchpoints between enquiry and decision, so hard-won interest does not vanish after a form fill or first call. Social content may be part of the work too. It is not automatically the work.
Build an Autumn Plan That Can Convert
The run-up to autumn and Christmas makes founders want everything launched by next week. We understand the urge. Still, marketing is not an emergency service, and rushed execution often creates a bigger bill in rework, confusion and half-finished activity.
A useful plan is paced to your cash flow and your capacity to engage with it. No lock-ins for the sake of it. You should know what is being done, why it is being done, and what signal will show whether it is helping. Marketing is a long game, but that does not mean vague waiting about. It means building activity on a message, offer and customer path that are pulling in the same direction.
Before commissioning another campaign, website or month of content, take stock. Look at the quality of your enquiries, the buyers you are attracting, the language you use, where prospects disappear, and why customers choose you or do not. Those answers tend to be more useful than another frantic month of posting. We have kissed the frogs so you do not have to.
Find The Actual Marketing Problem
If the symptoms are piling up, our founder marketing consultant in Glasgow can help you work out what needs fixing before you throw more money at it. At Elle & Co, we start with the evidence: the buyers, the message, the gaps and the numbers. Then we build a method around what is actually happening, rather than adding another sticking plaster.
